Painting involves applying pigments or colours onto a surface to create a picture or an image. It can be done using a variety of media, including watercolours, acrylic paint, oil paint, and various other painting media.
The practical aspect of the curriculum in grades 10 to 12 involve developing the skills needed to create paintings. Learners will practice using different painting techniques, such as brushwork, colour mixing, and creation of layering on painting surfaces. They will also practice different subject matter used in painting, such as landscape, portrait, and still life painting.
An experimental approach is encouraged using a variety of painting media and surfaces. Painting can be an expressive act, a narrative, an abstraction or an observational exercise. We strive to create the opportunity for learners to exercise their unique viewpoints and thereby to capture new experiences through their paintings.
Grade 10: Learners are introduced to using acrylic paint as a medium with a focus on the formal art elements and design principles as part of each project.
Grade 11: Learners are expected to follow an approach that is more experimental in terms of choices of subject matter and the use of painting materials.
Grade 12: Learners must build on the skills developed in Grades 10 and 11 and must display confidence in their application of paint. They have to explore the expressive possibilities of painting as a medium and they should develop an individual and conceptual approach towards their choices of subject matter.
